In a significant move aimed at improving bilateral relations with the United States, China has announced a major crackdown on fentanyl precursors. This action comes just before a planned visit by President Donald Trump to Beijing, suggesting that China is eager to bolster ties with Washington. The crackdown is seen as a response to ongoing concerns in the US regarding the proliferation of fentanyl and related substances, which have contributed to the opioid crisis in America.

The operations started in December in Hubei province, with authorities conducting a raid on a company in Wuhan suspected of dealing in precursor chemicals. This was reportedly prompted by intelligence from US anti-drug authorities. The scope of the investigation extends across the entire supply chain—from production to export—with officials emphasizing their commitment to addressing the issue effectively.

By the end of last month, the task force had investigated 22 cases, resulting in seven arrests. Additionally, four companies have faced administrative penalties for their involvement in the distribution of these chemicals. This crackdown not only highlights China's focus on controlling illegal drug activities but also serves as a strategic move to demonstrate goodwill in the context of US-China relations, which have often been strained over trade and security issues.
