Swedish Power Grid: Electricity Prices in Northern Sweden May Double

Electricity prices in Northern Sweden are projected to nearly double by 2030 due to industrial investments and changing supply-demand dynamics in the region.

In early 2023, Northern Sweden faced historic electricity prices, with spot prices reaching 94 öre, nearly 300% higher than the previous year. According to a report by Svenska kraftnät, these prices are expected to consistently rise, nearly doubling by 2030 driven by high electricity demand from industries such as Stegra and SSAB.

The analysis indicates a significant shift in the energy landscape of Sweden, especially as the electricity area SE1 is predicted to transition from being a net exporter to a net importer by 2030. This shift will lead to a reduction in surplus electricity, which is projected to decrease from 14 TWh in 2026 to -1 TWh in 2030, exacerbating the rising costs for consumers in the region.

Erik Böhlmark, head of units at Svenska kraftnät, discusses the implications of the forecast, highlighting the uncertainties involved in their projections and the factors influencing the anticipated price increases. As industrial investments ramp up, it's crucial for stakeholders to prepare for these changes in the electric market to mitigate impacts on consumers and ensure energy stability.
