French soldier reveals the location of military ship "Charles de Gaulle" on a fitness app

A French soldier inadvertently disclosed the location of the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" via a fitness tracking app, raising security concerns.

The French flagship, aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle," with accompanying frigates, was deployed in the Mediterranean in early March following military tensions in the Middle East sparked by an attack from the U.S. and Israel on Iran. The carrier has been stationed in the south of the Mediterranean since March 9, and French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that its presence is purely for defense, aimed at supporting France's allies amidst the unfolding conflict.

On March 13, a runner's activity on the fitness tracking app "Strava" revealed their location aboard the moving ship, which was situated in the sea northwest of Cyprus. This information was highlighted by the French newspaper "Le Monde," indicating that this fitness app's public profiles could potentially compromise military operations if sensitive locations are inadvertently shared.

French Armed Forces confirmed to the AFP news agency that if the reported information is verified, appropriate measures will be taken to mitigate any security risks. Military personnel are regularly reminded about security protocols regarding operational safety and the use of personal devices that could unintentionally disclose sensitive information.
