Demand from Finland: Hungary must be expelled from the EU
Aura Salla, a Finnish Member of the European Parliament, has called for Hungary's expulsion from the EU if its policies regarding Ukraine are not addressed.
Aura Salla, a Finnish MEP from the National Coalition Party, has made a stark demand for Hungary's expulsion from the European Union. She argues that Hungary's approach to its foreign policy concerning Ukraine, specifically Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's decision to block a €90 billion emergency aid package intended for Ukraine, warrants a serious reconsideration of its membership. Hungary has invoked its exemption to use Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which further complicates its standing in the EU as European nations rally in support of Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
Salla's comments underline a growing frustration within the EU regarding Hungary's repeated violations of union values and principles. She criticizes the current EU structure, suggesting that member states have become overly cautious and are unwilling to act against countries that threaten the unity and integrity of the bloc. In her view, the EU must prepare a mechanism for expelling member states that continually breach its foundational values, rather than merely adhering to existing treaties.
The call for a more decisive action reflects a broader sentiment among EU leaders who feel that words alone are insufficient in dealing with Hungary's actions. Salla emphasizes that now is the time for the EU to implement measures that ensure majority decisions can be made, enabling more decisive collective action to support Ukraine and uphold the principles of the European Union.
