Five million drivers need to 'take action' in 2026 or face penalties
Analysis reveals that millions of UK drivers must renew their driving licenses by 2026 to avoid penalties, with a significant number already driving with expired licenses.
Recent analysis by Co-op Insurance highlights a concerning trend among UK drivers: over five million motorists are at risk of facing penalties in 2026 if they fail to renew their driving licenses on time. The research draws on Freedom of Information data obtained from the DVLA, revealing that a substantial number of individuals are currently operating vehicles without valid licenses. Specifically, nearly 300,000 license photocards have expired between July and December of 2025, and over 210,000 driving entitlements that expired during the same period are still not renewed.
