Poland Rejects the Idea of a Joint Military Training Ground with Lithuania Across the Border
Poland has rejected Lithuania's proposal for a joint military training ground near the border, citing concerns over proximity to its territory.
The Lithuanian government has proposed the establishment of a new military training ground in the Lazdijai district, located near the borders of Poland and Belarus, which is strategically important in the Suwalki Corridor. Lithuanian officials have emphasized the importance of this project in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank defense and have suggested that Poland collaborate on the construction and utilization of this training ground. However, the Polish Deputy Defense Minister, Pawel Bejda, expressed that there will be no expansion of the Kapciamiestis military training ground into Polish territory.
During a press briefing in Suwalki, Bejda stated that Poland is not interested in participating in the cross-border military training ground, adding that negotiations are underway to ensure that the training facility is located at a sufficient distance from the Polish border. This decision is partly prompted by local protests from residents in the Seiny region, advocating for a considerable distance from their border. The Lithuanian government has already approved the proposal to establish the Kapciamiestis training ground, but further consensus from Poland and addressing local concerns are required before proceeding with the plan.
This rejection from Poland reflects wider regional concerns about military presence near borders, especially amid a complex security environment in Eastern Europe. The decision can potentially affect Lithuania's military strategy and its collaboration with NATO allies if Poland maintains a position against closer military cooperation. The bilateral relationship will need to navigate these security dynamics while considering the apprehensions of local populations affected by such military projects.
