Extended Activities of the Investigation Group Established at Eurojust Will Focus on Children Displaced from Ukraine
Eurojust and various European and Ukrainian institutions will focus on illegal transfers of Ukrainian children to Russia and Belarus.
Various institutions from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine are joining forces with Eurojust and Europol to enhance investigations concerning the illegal transfer and deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia and Belarus. This initiative aims to protect vulnerable children amidst the ongoing conflict and aims to improve coordination among countries involved in these investigations. The Prosecutor's Office emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in national investigations, leading to judicial processes in Ukraine and the identification of suspects in Lithuania.
The investigative group was set up in 2022 in response to the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, focusing on serious international crimes, including genocide and war crimes related to the detention of prisoners of war. The group's flexible model has allowed institutions to rapidly respond to newly committed crimes, exchange information swiftly, and share best practices among themselves. By effectively adapting to the evolving crisis, the group plays a vital role in legal accountability regarding these serious crimes.
