Bold advertisement from Tokmanni – "Nowadays, you need to stand out"
Tokmanni has released a bold advertisement for its Eurospar store that playfully mocks its competitor Kesko.
Tokmanni recently launched a bold advertisement for its new Eurospar store, which opened in Järvenpää, Finland, specifically designed to attract attention in a competitive grocery market. The ad features the slogan "Tavallista sparempi ruokakauppa" ("A better grocery store than usual"), with a notable visual of the word "parempi" (better) prominently displayed under Spar's red logo. This slogan closely resembles that of competitor K-Supermarket, which has led to speculation about whether the ad is an intentional jab at Kesko.
The commercial director of Tokmanni, Veli-Pekka Äärilä, commented on the current trend in the grocery sector where companies are increasingly mocking one another through their promotions. This phenomenon, according to Äärilä, arises from a fierce competitive landscape where differentiation is vital. While some might see the advertisement as overly aggressive or negative, consumer economics professor emeritus has refrained from outright condemnation, implying a recognition of the changing dynamics in advertising.
With the opening of the first Eurospar store in Uusimaa, Tokmanni is not just trying to attract customers but is also making a strategic move to establish its position in a crowded market. The playful competition and advertisements like this reflect broader trends in retail where attracting consumer attention often involves provocative campaigns. As grocery chains navigate these challenging waters, the way they choose to stand out can result in either positive consumer engagement or backlash depending on the public's reception of such tactics.
