The warning signs of meningitis are not always what we think

Meningitis symptoms can often be misidentified, leading to delayed treatment and higher mortality rates.

In the early hours of certain types of meningitis, patients may experience severe abdominal pain accompanied by fever and leg pain, which are not typically recognized as signs of this serious infection. This particular outbreak is attributed to strains of meningococcus (W and C) that are on the rise in Europe. In France, approximately 600 individuals are affected by meningitis each year, making it a critical health issue as the disease progresses rapidly and can result in a 10% mortality rate even with timely treatment.

The urgency in treating meningitis cannot be overstated, as it is a race against time. Notably, research indicates that 19 hours after the onset of symptoms, about half of the patients have not sought medical attention. Dr. Muhamed-Kheir Taha, the head of the National Reference Center for Meningococcus at the Pasteur Institute, emphasizes the critical importance of quick action in addressing the infection, which often goes unrecognized until it is too late.

The delay in seeking medical care is largely due to a lack of awareness regarding the symptoms of meningitis. As symptoms like abdominal pain may not be immediately associated with meningitis, patients often hesitate to seek treatment, therefore prolonging the duration of the illness and increasing the risk of severe outcomes. Public health campaigns aimed at educating the population about the signs of meningitis are essential in reducing these vital response times and potentially saving lives.
