Easter strikes at Spanish airports. Threatened Madrid and Barcelona
Workers at key handling companies in Spain plan strikes during the Easter holiday peak travel period, which may disrupt operations at major airports including Madrid and Barcelona.
As Spain approaches the significant Easter holiday travel season in 2026, labor unions representing employees at major handling companies have announced impending strikes, threatening widespread disruption. Unions CCOO, UGT, and USO plan to initiate an indefinite strike starting March 27 for Groundforce and March 28 for Menzies, which, while currently a formal announcement, indicates a serious lack of agreement that could escalate into action at a time when airports are busiest.
Both Groundforce and Menzies play critical roles in airport operations, handling tasks from passenger check-in and boarding to baggage loading, fueling, and ground transport services. Groundforce operates at 12 airports, including major hubs like Madrid, Valencia, Malaga, Ibiza, and Palma de Mallorca, while Menzies provides services at 11 other important ports, notably Barcelona, Seville, Murcia, and Las Palmas.
The potential for these strikes raises concerns about the impact on travelers and the overall effectiveness of airport operations during one of the peak travel periods in Spain. With the strikes set to coincide with the rush of holiday travelers, this situation could lead to significant delays and cancellations, highlighting the ongoing tensions between labor and employers in the aviation sector. Negotiations are critical in the coming weeks to avoid a scenario that could severely affect passenger experience during the holiday.
