Villeroy (Bank of France): The ECB does not currently forecast a recession

The ECB, according to Bank of France Governor François Villeroy de Galhau, currently does not foresee a recession in the Eurozone.

François Villeroy de Galhau, the Governor of the Bank of France, stated that the European Central Bank (ECB) does not anticipate a recession at this time in the Eurozone. Responding to a query from Boursorama, he emphasized that in the three economic scenarios recently published by the ECB, including a more optimistic fourth scenario, there is no indication of a recession. This assertion is significant as it reflects the ECB's current stance amidst rising oil prices and inflationary pressures in the Eurozone.

Villeroy's remarks came in light of concerns related to persistent inflation rates and the impact of escalating energy prices on the economy. He highlighted that energy prices contribute a notable portion to inflation, with a mere 9% effect on consumer price indices in France, of which only 4% can be attributed directly to oil prices. This information aims to clarify that while energy prices are a critical factor, they do not solely determine the overall inflation dynamics within the economy.

Furthermore, Villeroy dismissed the term 'stagflation'—which implies stagnation coupled with persistent inflation—clarifying that the current forecasts do not indicate such an economic stagnation scenario. His statements underscore the ECB's commitment to handling inflation while simultaneously fostering economic growth, suggesting a cautiously optimistic outlook for the Eurozone's economic trajectory in the near term.
