Average diesel price soars 25% to R$ 7.22 in Brazil, research shows
Diesel prices in Brazil have surged by 25% to an average of R$ 7.22, reflecting a significant increase since February amid geopolitical tensions.
A recent survey by TruckPag, a fleet management company, indicates that the average price of diesel in Brazil has skyrocketed to R$ 7.22 as of Wednesday, October 19. This increase represents a substantial rise from the average price of R$ 5.74 recorded at the onset of recent geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East at the end of February. The study analyzed over 143,000 diesel transactions across 4,664 gas stations, predominantly located on highways, with 94% of these stations serving truck drivers, highlighting the importance of diesel in the country's transportation sector.
Over the last month, an alarming 81.9% of these diesel purchases have been attributed to trucks, illustrating the fuel's crucial role in Brazil's logistics and supply chain. Last week, Brazil's National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reported an 11% increase in diesel prices compared to the previous week, reflecting the ongoing volatility in the fuel market. With the official price data released weekly by the ANP based on transactions collected during the first three business days, the nation's heavy reliance on diesel for trucking transport continues to pose significant challenges as prices rise.
The current surge in diesel prices may have broader implications for the Brazilian economy, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on transportation logistics. As fuel costs rise, transportation companies and their supply chain partners must prepare for potential increases in operational costs that could ultimately be passed down to consumers. Therefore, the ongoing spike in fuel prices necessitates close monitoring as it potentially impacts inflation and the cost of living in Brazil, raising concerns about how this will affect everyday citizens in the near future.
