Additional Recovery of 450 Million Won from Optimus Scandal's Mastermind, Total Recovery Reaches 19.3 Billion Won
The South Korean prosecution has recovered an additional 450 million won from the mastermind behind the Optimus asset management fraud, bringing the total recovered amount to 19.3 billion won.
The South Korean prosecution has successfully reclaimed an additional 450 million won from Kim Jae-hyun, the former CEO of Optimus Asset Management, who was convicted of orchestrating a large-scale fund fraud that led to losses exceeding 1 trillion won. The Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office reported on the 20th that out of the total 751.7 billion won in fines imposed on Kim, an additional 450 million won has been recovered. Kim was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the scandal, which involved hiding criminal proceeds through various means.
Previously, in July 2022, Kim was indicted for the Optimus fraud, and since then, the prosecution has been actively working to retrieve the misappropriated funds. The 450 million won recovered recently was traced back to a deposit for an apartment owned under Kim's wife's name in Gangnam, Seoul. The prosecutors had secured a claim over a tenancy deposit of 940 million won, leading to a successful ruling in their favor regarding a withdrawal of the paid deposit, enabling the recovery of this sum.
As of now, the total amount recovered from Kim's fraudulent activities stands at 19.38 billion won. The prosecution plans to distribute the funds retrieved under the existing legal framework to the victims affected by the scam, bringing some financial relief to those who suffered losses as a result of the massive deception orchestrated by Kim and Optimus Asset Management.
