At least 18 African migrants drown off coast of Comoros

At least 18 African migrants have drowned near the Comoros as they attempted to reach Mayotte, with many of the survivors unable to swim.

At least 18 African migrants seeking to reach the French island of Mayotte tragically drowned off the coast of Comoros, as per local officials and rescuers. The group, which consisted of around 50 individuals, was reportedly abandoned by smugglers in the ocean, attempting to make their way to the island. While around 30 individuals survived the ordeal, many were unable to swim, leading to a dire situation as they struggled against the sea.

The Comoros interior minister, Mohamed Ahamada Assoumani, confirmed that local residents, fishermen, and authorities have been involved in recovering the bodies. Initial reports indicated that eight bodies had been found, but searches have since uncovered more remains, heightening the tragedy of this incident. Among the deceased were two young children and two individuals from Burundi, which underscores the perilous nature of migrant journeys in search of better living conditions.

Mayotte, despite being considered France's poorest department, remains a significant destination for migrants largely due to its perceived advantages associated with French infrastructure and welfare systems. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants across the region, the risks associated with their journeys, and the pressing issue of human smuggling in the context of migration within Africa and the surrounding islands.
