Asda cuts meningitis jab to cost price in bid to get thousands vaccinated
Asda Pharmacy is offering the Meningitis B vaccination at cost price to encourage vaccinations amid a recent outbreak in Kent.
Asda Pharmacy has announced that it will offer the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination at cost price in all its pharmacies until April 30. This decision follows a warning from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) regarding a recent outbreak of cases in Kent, some of which have been identified as MenB. The retail pharmacy is setting the price for the vaccine at £75 per dose, with a full course of two doses costing £150, a significant reduction from its usual price of £179.96.
The vaccination initiative is targeted particularly at vulnerable groups, notably individuals aged 18-25, as they are considered to be most at risk. Meningitis B is known to be a fast-acting and potentially life-threatening infection, making vaccination an essential preventive measure. The first dose of the vaccine can begin to take effect within two weeks, providing crucial protection for those vaccinated during the outbreak period.
Faisal Tuddy, the Head of Pharmacy & Superintendent Pharmacist at Asda, expressed understanding of increasing public concern regarding meningitis and highlighted the company's commitment to making the vaccine more accessible to families. This move may encourage higher vaccination rates and potentially mitigate the impact of the outbreak, ultimately aiming to safeguard public health in the affected regions.
