Unemployment Rate Increased Last Year in All Age Groups

The unemployment rate in Finland rose for all age groups last year, according to a recent labor force survey from Statistics Finland.

In Finland, the unemployment rate experienced an increase across all age groups in the previous year, reflecting a troubling trend in the labor market, as reported by Statistics Finland's fresh labor force study. The report highlighted that this rise in unemployment affected both men and women, with young women in particular facing significant job losses. Despite an overall reduction in the number of employed women, men's employment figures remained stable during the same period.

Particularly concerning was the decline in employment among young women, especially in the age group of 25 to 34 years, where the job market shrank more noticeably. This demographic shift raises alarms about the long-term impacts of unemployment among younger segments of the population. The broader labor market, however, did show some positive signs with an increase in available workforce compared to the previous year, suggesting a potential recovery pathway despite rising unemployment figures.

The total number of employed and unemployed individuals rose by 27,000 from the previous year, bringing the total workforce to nearly three million people. This slight increase points to a complex picture of Finland's job market, which includes both challenges and potential recovery opportunities. Policymakers and labor officials are now faced with the task of addressing these trends to support vulnerable groups, particularly young women, to prevent further declines in employment stability.
