Tax Returns 2026: The 6 'traps' that hide additional taxes

The Greek tax authority has notified over 1.5 million taxpayers about the pre-filled tax returns available for submission starting April 16, 2026, highlighting potential pitfalls in the process.

In a recent communication to more than 1.5 million taxpayers, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) in Greece announced that tax returns for the year 2026 will be available for submission beginning April 16, 2026. The returns are pre-filled, making it easier for taxpayers, particularly employees and retirees, to verify their information through the online platform. Taxpayers have the option to either submit their returns themselves or authorize the tax authority to do so on their behalf, streamlining the filing process.

Taxpayers are also informed about the procedures for making any necessary amendments to their returns. If corrections are needed, they can submit an initial declaration by April 15, or a modified declaration without penalties from April 17 to July 15, 2026. This flexibility aims to assist taxpayers in ensuring their returns are accurate and prevent potential underreporting of income or tax obligations.

The AADE stresses the importance of reviewing pre-filled information, as any discrepancies will trigger notifications prompting taxpayers to revisit their online submissions. Those who confirm that their details are accurate will be able to file their returns earlier if they choose, minimizing last-minute rushes and allowing for a smoother tax season. This initiative reflects the authority's push for greater efficiency and compliance within the tax system.
