Stop the Elite World of Yachts, We Must Make It More Popular
Bernard d'Alessandri, the Secretary General of the Yacht Club of Monaco, emphasizes the need to make the yacht industry more inclusive and accessible to young people.
Bernard d'Alessandri, who has served as the Secretary General and Director General of the Yacht Club of Monaco since 1990, reflects on the evolution of the yachting world over the decades. In his early years, sailing was considered the gem of the seas, a time before environmental impact measurements like the Sea Index were introduced. Now, with the rapid growth of motor yachts often resembling floating cathedrals, d'Alessandri expresses concern that the yacht world remains too exclusive and disconnected from the general public.
To address this disparity, the Yacht Club of Monaco is organizing the Nautical Student Fair, which takes place from tomorrow until March 24. This event is open to middle and high school students and aims to spark interest in yachting among young people. D'Alessandri believes that it is crucial to make the yachting environment more inclusive and popular among the youth to counteract its elitist reputation. He asserts that there are numerous ways to engage with the boating world, allowing for a diverse range of experiences beyond mere luxury.
D'Alessandri's initiative represents a cultural shift within an industry traditionally perceived as elite. By encouraging the younger generation to connect with yachting, the Yacht Club of Monaco hopes to broaden the appeal of the sport and its associated activities. This bold move might not only revitalize interest in yachting among younger demographics but also contribute to a more sustainable and community-focused industry in the future.
