Tehran or Riyadh, will Pakistan get involved in the war?

Pakistan faces pressure to choose a side in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia after maintaining a neutral stance.

Until recently, Pakistan managed to maintain neutrality amidst the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia. However, with the ongoing war in the Middle East entering its third week, Islamabad is being compelled to align itself with one of the factions. This shift in position is significant as it could tilt the balance of power in the already volatile region, which is fraught with tensions and historical grievances between the two nations.

The relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has been solidified through a historical Mutual Defense Agreement signed in September, which includes a collective security clause reminiscent of NATO’s Article 5. This implies that any attack on Saudi Arabia is considered an attack on Pakistan as well, indicating that Islamabad's hands may be tied in the event of further aggression from Tehran. As Saudi Arabia has faced increasing threats from Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, its cautious yet impending response towards Iran remains a point of scrutiny.

At a recent press conference, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan expressed that the kingdom's patience has limits, signaling a potential escalation in hostilities should Iran continue its aggressive maneuvers. Pakistan’s strategic choice in this context could not only affect its bilateral relations with both Iran and Saudi Arabia but also influence the broader geopolitical dynamics in the region. The decision will undoubtedly carry consequences that resonate beyond its borders, affecting alliances and security agreements in a region that remains fundamentally fragile and divided.
