Photo ⟩ The ice jam has decreased in the Pļaviņas region

Recent reports indicate that the ice jam in the Pļaviņu water reservoir has reduced significantly over the last 24 hours.

Recent reports from the Aizkraukles municipality and the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center reveal that the ice jam in the Pļaviņu water reservoir has significantly decreased in the past 24 hours. In the city of Pļaviņas, the river has partially freed itself from ice, with only some ice remains along the banks. However, ice accumulation persists downstream from the city. Currently, the water level in the Daugava River near Pļaviņas is approximately two meters lower than the peak reached on March 17.

As the ice melts, it has been noted that no large chunks of ice are coming down from upstream. In Belarus and Russia, all the snow has not yet melted, but a rapid melting of the remaining snow is not expected, leading to a low risk of flooding. The water level in the Daugava River within Latvian territory has remained relatively stable over the last day, even as it has decreased in the Pļaviņu water reservoir.

Overall, flood levels on most rivers in Latvia are decreasing, with a continued drop in water levels. However, in some rivers, including the Misa and Aiviekste, high water levels persist, resulting in flooded lowlands. Meteorologists expect further monitoring of river conditions in the coming days to prevent potential flooding issues in these areas.
