NHL superstar underwent surgery

NHL superstar Auston Matthews underwent knee surgery after a serious injury, with a recovery period expected to last 12 weeks.

Auston Matthews, the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently underwent knee surgery following a severe injury sustained during a game against Radko Gudas's team. The Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed that Matthews will require approximately 12 weeks to recover. Unfortunately for Matthews, this surgery comes after the announcement that his season was already over, as the Maple Leafs are unlikely to make the playoffs this year, making it a strategic decision to address his injury now.

This season has been particularly challenging for Matthews, one of the top scorers in the NHL. In 60 games, he has recorded only 53 points, a disappointing statistic for a player of his caliber, especially as he was recently named Toronto's all-time leading goal scorer. Over his career, which began when he was selected first overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, Matthews has tallied 780 points (428 goals and 352 assists) in 689 regular-season games and has also served as the captain of the U.S. national ice hockey team that won gold.

The injury that led to his recent surgery was inflicted by Radko Gudas, who received a five-game suspension for his actions in the game. As Matthews addresses his recovery, the Toronto Maple Leafs will spend the remainder of their season attempting to regroup without their star player while assessing their future strategies moving forward in a challenging season.
