Xiaomi’s new-generation SU7 launch sparks fresh EV fight with Tesla in China
Xiaomi has launched its upgraded SU7 smart sedan, intensifying competition with Tesla and other electric vehicle makers in China.
Xiaomi has officially unveiled its new-generation SU7 smart sedan, complete with enhanced safety features and advanced smart-driving options, aiming to capture a share of the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market in China. The standard edition of the SU7 is priced at 219,900 yuan (approximately US$31,900), with the pro and max variants priced at 249,900 yuan and 303,900 yuan respectively. This pricing is strategically set lower than initial pre-sale estimates to attract buyers, although it exceeds the price of the first-generation SU7 launched earlier this year.
Analyst perspectives indicate that Xiaomi's pricing strategy is competitive within the EV landscape as they aim to rival not only Tesla but also other domestic manufacturers. Citibank's analysis has described the pricing as fair and predicts that the model could achieve robust sales, returning to a monthly run-rate of 270,000 units. Kyna Wong, an analyst at Citi, noted that the SU7's features position it comparably against rivals in the same category, highlighting its potential to achieve significant market penetration despite lacking standout advantages.
The launch of the SU7 marks a crucial moment for Xiaomi as it expands its footprint in the EV sector, which is increasingly dominated by Tesla and local competitors. This move is part of Xiaomi's broader strategy to diversify its product offerings beyond smartphones and into smart transportation, a market that sees growing demand amid increasing environmental awareness. The implications of this launch could reshape the competitive dynamics in the Chinese EV landscape, compelling other manufacturers to innovate further to maintain their market positions.
