Suspected of Slashing JR Seats 'Angry Over Delays and Cancellations' - Admits to 50-60 Cases
A 56-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly slashing seats on JR trains out of frustration over delays and cancellations, claiming responsibility for 50 to 60 similar incidents.
On December 20, the Osaka Prefectural Police announced the arrest of 56-year-old Masao Hanagata from Kashiwara City for allegedly slashing seats on JR Yamato Line trains. Hanagata reportedly used a utility knife, expressing his frustration over frequent train delays and cancellations, as well as difficulties with boarding and alighting due to poor vehicle design. The incident occurred on the evening of December 19, during the operation of a local train between Kyuhouji and Kashiwara stations.
According to police investigations, Hanagata had been slashing train seats inside a passenger car, and was apprehended on the spot by officers who were conducting surveillance due to a series of similar vandalism reports. JR West had previously informed the police about ongoing issues since February, where nearly 300 incidents of seat damage caused by sharp objects were recorded on the JR Yamato line since the summer of 2022. The police are now examining the connection of Hanagata's actions to the reported damages.
During questioning, Hanagata claimed he had slashed seats at least 50 to 60 times in the past, indicating a pattern of criminal behavior driven by dissatisfaction with train service. This case raises concerns about security and safety measures on public transportation, as well as the mental health of the individuals resorting to such destructive behavior in response to service-related frustrations.
