Haddad seeks a vice connected to agribusiness to strengthen himself in the interior of SP

Fernando Haddad is looking for a vice-presidential candidate linked to the agribusiness sector to bolster his campaign in the interior of São Paulo after his recent candidacy for governor.

Fernando Haddad, chosen by President Lula to run for the governorship of São Paulo and recently leaving the Ministry of Finance, is actively searching for a vice-presidential candidate with strong ties to the agribusiness sector. This strategy aims to consolidate support for the Workers' Party (PT) candidate in the less urbanized areas of the state, where they traditionally have weaker performance. Haddad aims to replicate a successful political strategy that emphasized cross-party alliances to strengthen their communication with rural voters.

In the 2022 elections, Haddad performed well in the metropolitan area of São Paulo but lost significantly to the Bolsonaro-backed candidate Tarcísio de Freitas in the interior region, receiving only 4.7 million votes compared to Tarcísio’s 7.9 million. The overall results saw Tarcísio win with 55% of the votes against Haddad’s 45%. Despite the defeat, it was still the best showing for the PT in São Paulo's electoral history, showcasing a gradual increase in the party's appeal among the state's electorate. This performance has raised hopes within Lula's political circle, as they consider it critical for national election success.

Political analysts believe that Haddad's efforts to seek alliances similar to that of Lula with current Vice President Geraldo Alckmin can enhance his standing among conservative rural voters. The collaboration between former adversaries like Lula and Alckmin represents a significant shift in Brazilian politics and may provide a blueprint for Haddad as he attempts to unify diverse political factions and gain traction in the influential agricultural sector during his upcoming campaign.
