The Argentine Association of Newspapers (ADEPA) has released its biannual report on press freedom, highlighting that democracy thrives on the exchange of ideas and the ability of various societal sectors to articulate their views. ADEPA warned, however, of a marked decline in respectful discourse in public debates, signaling an alarming trend in the country’s political environment.

In their report, ADEPA emphasized that while criticism of journalistic work is a legitimate aspect of democratic dynamics, it should occur without resorting to mechanisms of pressure, harassment, or stigmatization that could undermine the freedom of information activities. The association specifically pointed out the implications of President Javier Milei’s administration for press freedom, calling for a more respectful environment for discourse.

Furthermore, the association raised alarms over the establishment of the Official Response Office, which they believe could lead to the imposition of a so-called 'official truth.' This situation can create an atmosphere where certain narratives are privileged over others, raising significant concerns about the implications for free expression and a pluralistic media landscape in Argentina. ADEPA’s report serves as a critical warning that the health of public debate is essential for the preservation of democratic values.
