55% Oppose Dispatching Warships to Hormuz, 30% Support [Gallup]

A recent Gallup survey reveals that 55% of South Koreans oppose President Trump’s request to send military vessels to the Hormuz Strait.

A Gallup survey conducted from October 17 to 19 among 1,004 eligible voters in South Korea showed a significant majority opposing the dispatch of military vessels to the Hormuz Strait as requested by President Donald Trump. The survey found that 55% of respondents were against the idea, while only 30% supported it, with 15% withholding their opinions on the matter. This discontent appears to be widespread; even among the self-identified progressive voters, 70% opposed the deployment, while a considerable number of centrists (58%) also shared this sentiment.

Interestingly, opinions varied amongst different political affiliations, with the conservative bloc showing a near-even split on the issue (45% against and 42% in favor). Support for the dispatch was notably stronger among the ruling People Power Party supporters, where 56% endorsed the military request. The survey also revealed that 84% of respondents expressed interest in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between the United States and Israel against Iran, with a notable demographic trend showing more interest from men (62%) compared to women (44%). The older population, particularly those in their 50s and 60s, demonstrated a higher level of interest as well, contrasting with younger voters in their 20s who showed significantly less concern about the situation.

The implications of these survey results suggest a growing apprehension among South Koreans regarding potential military involvement in foreign conflicts, particularly those involving the United States. It highlights a possible divergence in public sentiment compared to the current government stance, as well as raising questions about future policy decisions that may require public support in military engagements abroad. Such surveys are vital for understanding the shifting landscape of public opinion in South Korea, especially in matters of national security and foreign alliances.
