The Labubu will have a movie: Sony and Pop Mart confirm more details about the film
Sony Pictures and the Chinese company Pop Mart confirmed the development of a film based on Labubu, a character from The Monsters universe.
Sony Pictures, in collaboration with the Chinese toy company Pop Mart, has announced the development of an animated film featuring Labubu, a character created by artist Kasing Lung. This film will be directed by British filmmaker Paul King, who also co-writes the screenplay with Steven Levenson. The film is expected to blend live-action with digital animation, marking a significant step in expanding the Labubu franchise which has been growing since the character's introduction in illustrated books published from 2015 onwards.
The production is still in its early stages, with the involvement of several notable names in its creative team. Kasing Lung, as the character's creator, will serve as an executive producer alongside Michael Schaefer and Wenxin She. Brittany Morrissey from Sony Pictures is overseeing the project's development, ensuring that the film remains true to its roots while appealing to a broader audience. This collaboration is particularly interesting given Pop Mart’s expertise in the toy industry and Sony’s experience in film production.
This announcement follows the news from December where it was reported that Sony secured the film rights for Labubu, a move that signals the company's commitment to developing content around this unique character. By establishing Labubu in cinematic terms, it represents an effort to capitalize on the popularity of the character and expand the franchise’s reach, potentially attracting a new audience who may not be familiar with the books but are fans of animation and film.
