Libertadores defines groups; see the opponents of Brazilian teams

The Copa Libertadores has defined the group stages for clubs, with Brazil having six representatives, including current champions Flamengo and vice-champions Palmeiras.

On Thursday night, Conmebol officially announced the groups for the first phase of the Copa Libertadores, involving 32 teams in total. The Brazilian football scene will see six teams competing, with Flamengo leading Group A and looking to defend their championship title. Notably, the group also includes Estudiantes from Argentina, Cusco from Peru, and Independiente Medellín from Colombia.

Palmeiras, the runner-up in 2025, finds themselves in a familiar position as they face the same competition from last year, including Cerro Porteño from Paraguay and Sporting Cristal from Peru, with Junior from Colombia completing Group F. This strategic repetition of opponents allows Palmeiras to aim for a strong start, as they successfully won all six of their matches in the previous edition’s group stage.

The tournament structure allows the top two teams from each group to advance to the knockout stages, heightening the competitive stakes for each match. The elimination of notable teams like Bahia and Botafogo in the preliminary rounds adds to the pressure for Brazil’s representatives to perform well and secure their progress in the prestigious continental tournament.
