Woman who helps to save lives after tragic melanoma loss wins award
Angie Nisbet, motivated by the loss of her best friend to skin cancer, has co-founded a sun-safe glove business and was awarded the 2026 Queensland AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.
Angie Nisbet, a fifth-generation grazier from Queensland, has been awarded the 2026 Queensland AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award in recognition of her significant contributions to skin protection advocacy. This recognition comes after she experienced the tragic loss of her best friend to skin cancer and her sister’s subsequent diagnosis with melanoma, prompting her to take action against the dangers posed by the Australian sun. With a focus on creating awareness and providing solutions, she co-founded a business named FarmHer Hands that specializes in producing colourful UPF 50+ sun-safe gloves designed to protect farmers working in open fields from harmful UV rays.
The gloves not only serve as a practical solution for sun protection but also aim to inspire other farmers and individuals within rural communities to prioritize their health amidst challenging environmental conditions. Ms. Nisbet's story highlights the intersection of personal loss and community health advocacy, emphasizing the need for awareness surrounding skin cancer risks, particularly in Australia, which has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Her efforts are intended to cultivate a safer working environment for farmers who often face prolonged sun exposure.
As she prepares to represent Queensland at the national awards, Ms. Nisbet’s achievements resonate beyond personal grief; they reflect a growing consciousness in rural regions about the importance of sun safety and preventive measures against skin cancer. Her journey underscores the potential for individuals to effect change in their communities through entrepreneurial efforts targeting pressing health issues, thereby fostering a culture of health and safety in the agricultural sector.
