“Everything seems to suggest that this is starting to die down”
Icelandic volcanologist Þorvaldur Þórðarson suggests that the volcanic eruption period in Reykjanesskaga may be coming to an end after five years.
Icelandic volcanologist Þorvaldur Þórðarson has indicated that the volcanic activity on the Reykjanesskaga peninsula is likely slowing down after a five-year period of eruptions. According to him, there is a fifty-fifty chance that the eruption period has come to a close, suggesting that the area may be moving into a new phase with decades possibly passing before another eruption occurs. Since the beginning of the eruptions in Geldingadalur near Fagradalsfjall, which marked the start of a new eruption cycle after nearly 800 years of dormancy, there have been a total of twelve eruptions over the past five years.
