Good News for Finland

The international athletic federation World Athletics has announced changes to the qualification system for track and field championships, favoring Finnish athletes.

The World Athletics (WA) has introduced a new qualification system for track and field championships that could significantly benefit Finnish athletes. This new model will first be implemented at the upcoming World Athletics Championships next year, and subsequently at the track and field events of the 2028 Olympics. Under the revised rules, an estimated 40% of competition spots will be allocated to athletes who meet the performance standard, while 60% will be awarded based on a ranking points system. This is a shift from the current model, which equally divides spots based on performance standards and ranking points.

The new approach is particularly advantageous for athletes who may not be at the very top of their sport but can still compete effectively. Athletes can now still qualify through accumulating ranking points by participating in C-level competitions and above, thus giving more opportunities for those who might struggle to break performance standards. WA's athletes' commission has advocated for this reform, emphasizing its potential to enhance participation and accessibility in athletics for a broader range of competitors.

For Finnish athletes and fans, this change brings optimism, as it could lead to greater representation in international competitions. With a more favorable qualification structure, it is anticipated that more Finnish competitors will have the chance to showcase their talents on the world stage, thereby strengthening Finland's presence in global athletics and hopefully improving performance outcomes at major events.
