EU faces energy price ‘tsunami’ – Putin envoy

Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev warns of a significant surge in energy prices in Europe, attributing it to the EU's rejection of Russian energy and ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev has issued a warning about an impending surge in energy prices in Europe, characterizing it as a "tsunami" that will severely impact the continent. He attributed this looming crisis to the EU's decision to reject Russian energy supplies, describing it as a result of what he calls the "stubborn stupidity" of leading EU officials like Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas. Dmitriev points to the escalating situation in the Middle East, particularly the US-Israeli attacks in Iran, as a catalyst for the increasing volatility in global energy markets.

The current geopolitical landscape is contributing to significant fluctuations in gas and oil prices, which have surged dramatically since earlier in the year. Since March 1, gas prices have escalated by roughly 70%, and oil prices have risen above $110 per barrel due to disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is a critical passage for about 20% of the world’s oil supply, and any disruptions there can lead to immediate and severe consequences for European energy security.

Dmitriev's comments reflect a broader narrative from Moscow that aims to challenge the EU's energy policies while leveraging the current tensions and price surges to criticize Europe’s reliance on alternative energy sources. With the geopolitical turmoil continuing, this warning may signal not only an economic issue but also an increasing challenge for the EU as it seeks to navigate its energy strategy amidst increasing pressures from both external conflicts and internal policy disagreements regarding energy independence from Russia.
