Ambassador: Iran demands Germany clarifies the role of Ramstein military base

Iran has requested Germany to clarify the role and legality of the Ramstein military base in light of its use by U.S. forces.

Iran has formally requested Germany to provide clarification about the role of the Ramstein Air Base, as voiced by Iranian Ambassador M. Nili. He expressed that the involvement of the base in U.S. military operations remains officially unclear to Iran. The lack of a response from Germany to this request raises questions about transparency in military engagements, particularly in light of international legal considerations.

Ambassador Nili pointed out that the utilization of the Ramstein base by the U.S. could potentially violate United Nations Resolution No. 3314. This resolution stipulates that territory entrusted to another state must not be used for acts of aggression against a third state. Nili indicated that Iran is uncertain whether the operations conducted from Ramstein are in compliance with this provision, highlighting significant legal ramifications if the base is deemed to be in violation.

In contrast, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remarked that he currently sees no reason to doubt the legality of Ramstein's use in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Recent comments from German officials neared the subject of Ramstein's involvement in military actions but did not provide a conclusive stance, indicating a broader diplomatic tension regarding military transparency and international law obligations in the context of the U.S.'s operations from German soil.
