A Latvian living in Lebanon: We hear warplanes and drones every day and night

A Latvian resident in Lebanon describes the daily sounds of warplanes and drones amid rising tensions and military actions in the region.

In Lebanon, the atmosphere remains tense as alarms and explosions are reported daily, particularly in the southern part of the country and the capital, Beirut. This week, the Israeli army issued a warning for residents of the southern city of Tyre, advising them to evacuate due to anticipated large-scale strikes. Consequently, the number of displaced people has rapidly increased, surpassing one million across the country, highlighting the scale of the crisis.

Amid these alarming developments, Krista Bētiņa-Kašu, a Latvian living in Lebanon, shared her experiences and the challenges faced by displaced families. Her organization continues to provide assistance to hundreds of families by offering shelter, food, medication, and other essential supplies. Many of these individuals originate from Christian backgrounds, and the emotional toll of the ongoing conflict has been profound as they navigate their uncertain futures and the necessities of daily life in a war zone.

Krista emphasized the persistent danger and psychological strain the residents are experiencing as they hear drones flying overhead regularly, contributing to the pervasive atmosphere of anxiety and fear. The situation is complicated by the uncertainty regarding the duration of the conflict, leading to ongoing needs for food and safe places to stay for those affected by the violence, underscoring the urgent humanitarian needs in the region.
