Iran says it will show ‘zero restraint’ if energy infrastructure is targeted again

Iran has warned of severe retaliation should its energy infrastructure be attacked again, following recent strikes on its gas facilities by Israel that have disrupted global gas supplies.

In a stark warning, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran would exhibit 'zero restraint' if its energy infrastructure faces further attacks. This proclamation comes on the heels of significant bombardments initiated by Israel on Iran's South Pars gasfield, a critical energy site that Iran shares with Qatar. These hostilities sparked a series of retaliatory assaults directed at Qatar's Ras Laffan gas complex, significantly impacting Qatari liquefied natural gas export capabilities and causing global gas prices to soar, indicative of the potential for a longer-term energy crisis.

Araghchi elaborated that Iran's response to Israel's aggression was measured and restrained, explicitly stating that they utilized only a fraction of their capabilities in retaliation. The Iranian official expressed that their limited response was primarily out of respect for calls for de-escalation amidst rising tensions in the region. Nevertheless, the recent conflict has sparked considerable fluctuations in global stock markets and energy prices, instigating fears of a significant disruption in essential gas supplies given that Ras Laffan accounts for approximately 20% of global liquefied natural gas availability.

The recent violence has not only affected bilateral relations between Israel and Iran but has also raised alarms across Gulf neighbors and international stakeholders reliant on the energy output from this region. The extent of the damage inflicted on production capabilities, especially for Qatar, raises concerns over sustained energy stability in a global context where natural gas consumption continues to rise. Thus, stakeholders may need to recalibrate their strategies in light of potential escalation in military engagement over energy resources.
