M. Schinas: 'Either with Hamas or with us. Turkey must choose'

Margaris Schinas asserts Turkey must decide between supporting Hamas or aligning with Europe amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In an exclusive interview with Euractiv, former European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas stated that Turkey needs to make a critical decision regarding its support for Hamas, the organization labeled as terrorist by the EU, or align itself with European interests. This statement comes at a time when tensions are escalating in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing conflict linked to Iran, raising significant questions about Turkey's regional role and diplomatic positioning.

Schinas, who has also served as the chief spokesperson for former Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, highlighted that the current geopolitical situation places Turkey in an awkward position. He referred to numerous images of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan alongside the deceased Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Hamas leaders as evidence of the sensitive and contradictory nature of Turkey's present alliances. The historical ties and recent developments illustrate a complex relationship that Turkey must navigate carefully.

Erdoğan has frequently referred to Hamas as a 'liberation movement', which complicates Turkey's diplomatic relations with Europe. Schinas’s comments emphasize the pressing need for Turkey to clarify its stance in light of growing pressures in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially as the actions of regional powers continue to impact stability and peace in the area.
