Nammo in a squeeze between need and capacity: – We just have to push on
Nammo is facing pressure to significantly increase ammunition production to meet rising demands, especially from Ukraine, requiring a quick investment of 10 billion NOK.
Nammo, a Norwegian defense company, has acknowledged that it must rapidly scale up its ammunition production to meet the increasing demand, particularly from Ukraine amid ongoing conflicts. CEO Morten Brandtzæg expressed concerns about the slow production pace, stating that the company is not meeting the requirements fast enough to support Ukraine's defensive needs. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the risks associated with inadequate responsiveness in the face of war and the importance of expediting decision-making processes.
To facilitate this scaling up, Nammo requires an investment of 10 billion NOK to expand operations both at its Raufoss facility and other locations in Europe and the USA. Brandtzæg made it clear that without sufficient ammunition, even advanced military systems like tanks would be ineffective. The company is optimistic that full expansion could create approximately 1,000 new jobs at Raufoss, highlighting the potential economic benefits alongside the strategic military support that enhanced production could offer.
The context of this demand is underscored by a recent visit from a group of Ukrainian parliamentarians to Nammo, where Brandtzæg publicly apologized for the slow pace of ammunition production. His candid remarks reflect the intense geopolitical pressures influencing defense industries and the need for rapid mobilization in times of conflict. As Nammo navigates these challenges, it must also contend with production capacities and investments to ensure they can adequately respond to demands from allied nations like Ukraine.
