ELTA briefly: P. Gražulis, I. Vėgėlė, and R. J. Jankūnas meeting with the US envoy, American sanctions lifted on 'Belaruskalij'

Lithuanian politicians met with the US envoy to discuss various issues including the lifting of American sanctions on the Belarusian company 'Belaruskalij' in exchange for the release of political prisoners in Belarus.

On a recent Thursday, the Lithuanian government unveiled plans to reduce fuel prices and announced that Belarus had released another group of political prisoners. In a reciprocal move, the United States lifted sanctions on the Belarusian company 'Belaruskalij,' as well as two banks and the Ministry of Finance. This decision reflects the ongoing geopolitical dynamics between the US, Lithuania, and Belarus, particularly in the context of human rights and economic ties.

The meeting with the US envoy to Belarus, J. Coale, took place in a hotel in the capital and included members of the 'Farmers' faction in the Lithuanian Parliament, I. Vėgėlė and R. J. Jankūnas, along with MEP P. Gražulis. During the discussions, they focused on matters such as potassium fertilizers, transit issues, and the Kapčiamiesčio landfill. Additionally, there were talks about truck logistics and political prisoners, highlighting the complexities of international relations in the region. However, neither Jankūnas nor Vėgėlė provided extensive details about the discussions.

President Gitanas Nausėda also met with the special envoy and expressed criticism regarding the involvement of parliamentary members and MEPs in the ongoing negotiations. His remarks underline the sensitivity and significance of the issues being addressed, particularly regarding Belarus and the implications for Lithuania's foreign policy. The lifting of sanctions and the dialogue with Belarus reflects the critical balance Lithuania seeks to maintain in its relationships with both the United States and its geographical neighbor, Belarus.
