Putin carrying out his threat
Russia is currently trying to expand its buffer zone in Ukraine, a military expert states.
In an analysis provided on Iltalehti's Situation Studio, military expert Emil Kastehelmi has indicated that Russia is actively working to establish and expand a buffer zone within Ukraine. This zone, defined as a strip of territory claimed by Russia to safeguard its own borders against potential Ukrainian attacks, essentially involves the transfer of conflicts onto Ukrainian soil. Kastehelmi emphasizes that the creation of such buffer zones is not a new tactic for Russia, having made similar threats since the onset of the ongoing war.
Over the course of this year, Russia has been intensifying its attempts to solidify its grip on regions already under its control in Ukraine. Kastehelmi notes that Russian incursions across the border have become noticeably more aggressive, with most of the small areas captured by Russian forces located in northeastern Ukraine's Sumy region. This change in tactics suggests a shift in Russia's military strategy as it seeks to further establish dominance in contested areas, primarily in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Additionally, there are reports that Russia is finally gaining control over the city of Vovchansk in the region of Kharkiv after prolonged fighting. The implications of these developments could be significant, as the establishment of a buffer zone could alter the dynamics of the conflict and may provoke further responses from Ukraine and its allies. Ultimately, these actions signify a continuation of Russian military aggression and a strategic approach to secure perceived territorial interests in the region.
