In Liepāja, medical professionals concerned about violence in schools
Medical professionals in Liepāja express growing concern over rising incidents of violence in schools, resulting in injuries among students.
In recent weeks, medical professionals in Liepāja have reported an alarming increase in violent incidents among school children. A pediatrician from the Liepāja regional hospital, Jūlija Cīrule-Galuza, highlighted cases of brutal fights that have led to multiple children requiring medical attention. Severe injuries, including children being kicked in the head, have troubling long-term physical and emotional effects, and doctors fear that many instances might go unreported.
Cīrule-Galuza noted that children often express that these violent encounters are not isolated occurrences, indicating a series of unresolved conflicts that escalate into physical altercations. Many children are unaware of how to seek help or resolve their issues, leading to a cycle of violence. This issue is not just a concern for medical professionals; it reflects a broader problem within the educational institutions in Liepāja, where similar conflicts have been noted across various schools.
Law enforcement has also taken notice, with the State Police in Liepāja reporting four documented cases of school violence this year. Ingus Ukstiņš, the head of the Liepāja division of the Kurzeme regional police, mentioned that some educational institutions repeatedly come under police scrutiny for such incidents, underscoring an urgent need for intervention and improved conflict-resolution mechanisms in schools to protect the well-being of students.
