LAPD union calls for probe into LA council president over alleged call during traffic stop
The LAPD union is requesting an investigation into LA Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson for allegedly trying to evade a traffic citation by contacting a school board member during a stop by a police officer.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) has called for an investigation into City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson following an incident that occurred on March 4, where he was stopped by a Los Angeles School police officer for making a U-turn in a school zone. During this traffic stop, Harris-Dawson allegedly made a call to a member of the Los Angeles United School District in an attempt to leverage his position in order to avoid a citation, which raises serious ethical questions regarding the misuse of power by elected officials.
Harris-Dawson has stated that he believes he was a victim of racial profiling during the traffic stop, as he was pulled over while driving a government vehicle to a committee meeting. The citation issued was for $238, and the circumstances surrounding the stop and the subsequent call have sparked a larger conversation about accountability and fairness in law enforcement practices, especially in areas where traffic laws are being enforced in school zones.
The LAPPL is urging City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto to investigate the matter to determine whether Harris-Dawson's actions constitute a misuse of his official position. This incident highlights the ongoing issues of racial profiling in policing, the accountability of public officials, and the importance of maintaining integrity in public service, especially in sensitive areas like school zones where children's safety is at stake.
