How school uniform helped organization identify victim of sexual abuse posted on the internet

A young adult was identified after years of being a victim of online sexual abuse thanks to her school uniform appearing in videos and images.

A young woman who had been a victim of online sexual abuse was finally identified after years of investigation by Internet safety experts. The breakthrough came when investigators from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) noticed her wearing a school uniform in one of the many images and videos that had circulated online. The identification of the victim, known only as Mabel (a fictitious name), was described as a significant achievement for online safety researchers, who often struggle to locate victims in such cases.

The problematic content first came to the attention of the IWF in 2020, but at that time, there were no leads that could help track down the victim. The young girl, who was approximately 13 at the time, had been lured through video calls and text messages by predators into creating abusive content. The identification process was notably rare and challenging for the investigative analysts involved, particularly given the extreme nature of some of the material they had to sift through.

The use of school uniforms in the online abuse highlighted a distressing facet of how abusers operate and raises significant concerns regarding child safety in the digital age. Mabel's story underscores the necessity for stringent online safety measures and supports, while also demonstrating the perseverance and dedication of organizations like the IWF in addressing and combatting child exploitation in digital spaces.
