Stairs that smelled of wood and transported thousands of fans. The first escalator was launched at Letná 100 years ago

The first escalator in Czech lands, made of wood, began operation on March 21, 1926, in Prague at Letná.

One hundred years ago, on March 21, 1926, the first escalator in the Czech lands was unveiled in Prague's Letná district. This wooden escalator was a covered moving staircase that replaced a defunct funicular tram, transporting thousands of fans during its operation until 1935. It even made an appearance in the film 'Muži v offsidu' with scenes filmed on these moving stairs. The development of this escalator traces back to the Jubilee Land Exhibition in 1891. It was during this event that the first funicular was launched to Letná, which actually began operations two months earlier than the more famous Petrín funicular. However, after World War I, the funicular became neglected, and a private investor seized the opportunity to construct the covered moving staircase between 1924 and 1926 on the steep slope. The first Prague moving sidewalk was important as it operated on a similar principle to modern escalators. The escalator featured a wooden tread design, and the track mechanism involved a moving belt that wrapped around two cylinders located on either end of the track, reminiscent of today's escalators. The creation of this escalator not only marked a technological advancement in the Czech Republic but also served as a vital means of transportation for local residents and visitors during its brief operational period.
