Speed cameras that don't flash could be coming to a street near you
New speed cameras using advanced technology that do not flash when capturing speeding vehicles are set to be trialed in various locations across London.
Speed cameras that feature cutting-edge 4D-imaging radar technology and 4K cameras are being introduced in London, aiming to enhance road safety without the intrusive flash of traditional cameras. These new devices are capable of monitoring up to five lanes of bi-directional traffic, significantly improving upon the current models, which can only observe three lanes. Over the next few weeks, these cameras will be deployed in specific areas including Haringey, Tower Hamlets, and Croydon, aimed at 20mph and 30mph speed limits.
The trial of these innovative speed cameras is a collaborative effort between Transport for London (TfL) and the Metropolitan Police, forming part of the broader Vision Zero strategy. This initiative is designed to make Londonโs roads safer for all users, particularly in light of increasing road safety concerns. Research by TfL indicates that the effectiveness of these non-flashing cameras could lead to a reduction in speeding incidents, thus helping to lower the risk of accidents on city roads.
As these developments unfold, the implementation of such technology marks a significant shift in how traffic enforcement is approached in London, suggesting a move towards smarter and less disruptive systems in managing speed violations. The results of the trial will be closely monitored to assess their impact on road safety and whether they will lead to a permanent adoption of similar systems across the city.
