Uttar Pradesh will now have a full-time DGP, these names are at the forefront in the race

The Uttar Pradesh government has sent a panel of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission for the appointment of a full-time Director General of Police (DGP) following a Supreme Court order.

In response to a Supreme Court directive, the Uttar Pradesh government has forwarded a list of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the selection of a full-time Director General of Police (DGP). Since the removal of Mukul Goel from the position in 2022, the state has seen five acting DGPs, with Rajeev Krishna currently holding the responsibility. The process involves considering names of officers from the 1994 batch for the DGP role, indicating a systematic approach towards reinstating a permanent leadership in the police hierarchy.

The series of temporary appointments began following Mukul Goel's departure in May 2022, which raised concerns over stability in the state's law enforcement. The first acting DGP, D.S. Chauhan, served until March 2023, followed by R.K. Vishwakarma for a month and Vijay Kumar for nine months. Prashant Kumar, a trusted officer within the government, served the longest as an acting DGP, holding the position for one year and four months until his retirement, further highlighting the urgency and need for a permanent chief to lead the Uttar Pradesh Police.

As the UPSC evaluates the panel and aims to select three of the most qualified officers for the position, it emphasizes the importance of having consistent and competent police leadership in a state that has faced significant challenges in law enforcement. This move is expected to not only provide stability to the Uttar Pradesh Police but also restore public confidence in its operational capability and integrity.
