Ministerial Costs of the People’s Party Amount to 18 Million
The ministerial costs associated with the People’s Party have reached 18 million Icelandic krónur, revealing significant government expenditure.
Recent inquiries revealed that the turnover of ministers from the People’s Party incurred substantial costs, totaling 18 million Icelandic krónur. Inga Sæland, the leader of the People’s Party, highlighted that the waiting salaries for ministers have been a considerable expense for the government. Specifically, it was reported that the state had paid over nine million krónur in 2025 for the waiting salary of the former Minister of Education and Children, Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, and nearly eight million krónur for Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson, the former Minister for the same department, in the current year.
Diljá Mist Einarsdóttir, a member of the Independence Party, expressed surprise at the revealed amounts and noted her intent to file a follow-up inquiry due to the lack of clarity in the government’s responses. She has been actively researching various governmental expenditures and found the figures concerning ministerial costs particularly shocking. Diljá suspects that there might have been errors in reporting the expenses related to the ministerial transitions and is committed to seeking further clarification to ensure accountability within government spending.
The implications of this financial outlay could resonate throughout Iceland's political landscape, prompting discussions on the efficiency of government spending and transparency regarding ministerial appointments. Such significant expenditures may lead to scrutiny of political decisions and their financial impacts, which is a critical aspect of public governance in Iceland. It raises questions about how political parties manage their transition costs and the broader context of public accountability in government affairs.
