Woman acquitted of drugging, killing husband, and throwing body in the dunes is retried in SC
A woman previously acquitted of drugging and murdering her husband is being retried in Florianópolis, Brazil, after the initial verdict was overturned.
Camila Fernanda Franca Pereira, accused of drugging and murdering her partner Gustavo Alberto Sagaz, is facing a new trial in Florianópolis, Brazil, after her initial acquittal in 2025 was annulled. The case, which began on a Thursday morning, revolves around the brutal murder of Sagaz, who was discovered with 36 stab wounds in the dunes of Praia do Moçambique in August 2023. Following the annulment of her earlier verdict, the jury is reassessing evidence and motives surrounding the shocking crime.
The prosecution claims that financial disputes regarding a family business fueled the conflict leading to the murder. Allegedly, Pereira aimed to gain financially from her husband's demise, specifically by claiming life insurance and controlling their shared assets post-murder. The nature of the evidence and the arguments presented in court are critical as they could ultimately determine Pereira's guilt or innocence.
Pereira was apprehended a month after the crime in the neighborhood of Ingleses, where she had resided with Sagaz. She faces serious charges including triple-qualified homicide and concealment of a corpse. As the retrial unfolds, both the defense and prosecution are preparing to present their cases vigorously, with the defense expressing intent to achieve a verdict similar to the first trial, aiming for Pereira's exoneration once again.
