Thailand: Prime Minister Anutin's Decision to Continue - Oil Shortage, Economic Slump... Numerous Challenges Looming

The Thai parliament has confirmed Prime Minister Anutin's continuation in office amid ongoing economic and oil supply challenges.

On March 19, the Thai House of Representatives held a prime ministerial election in which Prime Minister Anutin was reappointed to continue in office. Thailand has faced continued political turmoil, with two prime ministers being ousted in the past years. The new coalition government, formed by Anutin's conservative 'Bhumjaithai Party'—which secured 191 out of 500 seats during the February general election—needs to establish a stable administration to address pressing issues such as the ongoing oil shortage caused by the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the struggling national economy.

Despite being the leading party, the Bhumjaithai Party will still face significant challenges regarding effective governance and devising sound economic strategies, especially as Thailand’s GDP growth remains low, with projections of only 2.4% in 2025. This is particularly concerning when compared to neighboring countries like Vietnam and Malaysia, which anticipate growth rates above 5%. To remedy this, the new government must diversify oil import sources to lessen dependency on the Middle East and tackle territorial disputes with Cambodia, among other urgent domestic issues.

However, the stability of the governing coalition between Bhumjaithai and the 'Thai Sang Thai Party,' the third-largest party led by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is uncertain. Anutin had previously served as the interior minister in a coalition government led by Thaksin's party, which had ended in conflict due to disputes over cabinet appointments. Furthermore, Anutin left a previous coalition government over dissatisfaction related to handling the Cambodian border dispute, indicating potential friction ahead as the new administration seeks to solidify its power and address the nation's myriad issues.
