Heartbroken by poor performance in the WC, this cricketer leaves the team captaincy

Paul Stirling has stepped down as captain of the Irish T20 International team following a disappointing performance in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 did not go well for Ireland, as they failed to progress to the Super 8 stage and finished fourth in Group B, winning only one out of four matches, with two losses and one game abandoned due to rain. In light of this disappointing performance, 35-year-old veteran batsman Paul Stirling has decided to resign from the role of captain of the Irish T20 International team. His resignation comes as part of preparations for the next T20 World Cup in 2028, reflecting a desire for Ireland to focus on rebuilding and strengthening their squad for future competitions. Stirling, who was appointed captain of both Ireland's ODI and T20 teams in October 2023, led the team during the recent T20 World Cup. However, he only played two matches in the tournament due to a knee injury sustained in the game against Australia, which forced him to miss the remainder of the competition. During his absence, wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker took over the captaincy. Cricket Ireland has since made it clear that they support Stirling's decision and recognize the need for a strategic shift in leadership as the team looks ahead to future tournaments.
