The situation looked normal, but the driver's anxious behavior betrayed the 'Audi' driver
Police in Tauragė stopped a driver's Audi for a routine check and discovered a significant amount of contraband cigarettes due to the driver's suspicious behavior.
On March 18, during a routine check in Tauragė, Lithuania, police stopped an Audi A4 after noticing the driver's anxious demeanor. The driver's unease raised suspicions among the officers, prompting a more thorough investigation of the vehicle. Upon inspection, the police uncovered six boxes of contraband cigarettes, totaling 3,000 packs, all marked with Belarusian excise stamps.
The total value of these cigarettes exceeded 15,000 euros, given they lacked the required Lithuanian government stamps. The investigation has also considered the possibility that these cigarettes were smuggled into Lithuania from Belarus using helium balloons, as the boxes were reportedly wrapped and prepared for attachment to balloons. This unusual method of contraband transportation indicates a level of premeditation and organization involved in the smuggling operation.
Currently, a pre-trial investigation is underway regarding the illegal possession of excise goods by the 32-year-old driver. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about cigarette smuggling in the region, especially from Belarus, and underscores the efforts of Lithuanian authorities to tackle such illicit trade and maintain border security.
